Why 'Friends' is the Perfect Throwback to the 90s
Introduction
It's been 23 years since the unforgettable gathering at Central Perk, where a chef, a jilted bride, a paleontologist, a singer-turned-masseuse, and a struggling artist (ahem, Chandler Bing, the "transponster") crossed paths. This quirky group of six New Yorkers was flawed in their own unique ways.
At some point, each of them faced a low point, where their careers felt like a joke, they were struggling financially, and love seemed as elusive as a unicorn. Yet, despite the challenges, they persevered and found ways to thrive in the competitive city that never sleeps.
What is a Sitcom?
The concept of a sitcom can be broken down to its etymology: "situation comedy" literally means a comic system tied to a specific situation. The term "situation" is complex, encompassing a display of people and things within a defined setting. Thus, a sitcom is the comedic representation of this display within a particular location. The definition of "location" also poses questions: is it a fixed setting, like the classic sitcoms of the 1950s and '60s? Or is it a city, as seen in more modern shows like Beverly Hills 90210? What about when the central location serves as a hub, but the action unfolds in multiple locations, as in Call My Agent!
The meaning of sitcom is also shaped by its origins: sitcoms are often seen as an American cultural phenomenon. By the 1980s, American comedies had conquered the world. Generations grew up with Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston as their friends, and now younger viewers stream those classic shows. In fact, one could argue that familiarity with sitcoms serves as a cultural touchstone between generations. Those who experienced the dominance of American culture and a few iconic shows may find it harder to relate to the new generation, who see life as their own sitcom – and don't need a TV show to teach them about relationships and growing up.
Is FRIENDS a Perfect Time Capsule:
"Friends" is often regarded as a cultural phenomenon that embodies the spirit of the 1990s. The show's fashion sense, cultural references, and portrayal of technology are all quintessentially 90s. Rachel's iconic haircut, Chandler's sweater vests, and Joey's chain wallets are just a few examples of the many fashion trends that the show popularized.
The show's frequent references to 90s pop culture, including music, movies, and celebrities, also add to its nostalgic value. The depiction of technology, such as landline phones, answering machines, and early computers, is also a nostalgic reminder of the era.
Furthermore, the show's portrayal of social dynamics, including dating, job hunting, and living independently, provides a relatable glimpse into the lifestyle and struggles of young adults during the 90s. The show's set design, particularly the apartments and Central Perk coffee shop, also reflect the urban living style of the decade.
FRIENDS- Not a Perfect Time Capsule?
While "Friends" is often hailed as a perfect time capsule of the 90s, it is not without its flaws. One major criticism is its lack of diversity, particularly in terms of racial and ethnic representation. The show's cast was predominantly white, which does not accurately reflect the multicultural nature of 1990s New York City.
Additionally, some plotlines and jokes reinforce outdated gender roles and stereotypes, which may not align with contemporary views. The show has also been criticized for its insensitive jokes and situations, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ issues and body image.
Furthermore, the characters' lifestyles and spacious apartments are often seen as unrealistic for their financial situations, especially in Manhattan. Finally, while the show attempts to depict 90s technology, it sometimes lacks accuracy or consistency in how technology was used or perceived during that time.
Conclusion
No matter how we constructively criticize Friends, we can never have “that” side of feeling for the show. We all love it, and I think after writing this, the next thing I will have is my popcorn and laptop to watch Chandler and his maintenance capabilities for Monica
